As I put together the room refresh mood board I’m working on just now, it’s led naturally to writing this next blog article. People often ask me, ‘What can I do to create an attention-grabbing focal point in my room, without spending a fortune?’
Making a visual statement in your home is like a burst of fireworks in your décor. It’s that one item or area that instantly grabs your attention and makes you go, “Wow!”
It could be an oversized piece of artwork which commands a wall in your living room and becomes a talking point. Or a standout, bold-coloured velvet sofa that beckons like the one featured below from Graham & Green. It could simply be painting or papering a feature wall in your room or a piece of upcycled furniture in a bold statement colour. No matter how big or small your décor budget, there are so many fun ways to grab the headlines in your own home.
Create Impact with Colour
Who says you need to play it safe when it comes to decorating? A little colour can go a long way to adding some oomph to a room. And if you want to make a bold statement, it doesn’t need to break the bank.
By far the easiest and most cost-effective way to achieve this is with a can of paint. It’s the perfect way to grab attention. Think sassy red chair or coffee table, sunny yellow fireplace or door trims, or a chic indigo blue living room floor. Be warned, once you start painting, you may never want to stop – it’s just too fun!
Oversized Artwork and Inspiring Gallery Walls
Think big! Oversized items always make a statement and create impact. Giant artwork can be a real conversation starter, expressing your unique personality and adding some spectacular flair to your home or office space. Don’t worry if you don’t have a big fat art budget, try your hand at creating your own canvas or frame a striking piece of fabric or textile you love. Keep it simple, keep it unique, and make it all your own.
Another inexpensive but high impact way to grab attention is to create a ‘gallery wall’. This is a great way to create a feature in your space without even using paint or wallpaper. It can be positioned anywhere but popular areas include hallways and staircases, living room or a wall in your office space.
Creating a gallery wall doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. The key is to bring together your favourite pieces that reflect your personality or maybe a mega work project you want to highlight to visitors. You can experiment with different themes like black and white photos, or different styles of wall art such as family photos or quirky modern art or even wallpapers you love framed up.
Statement Lighting
A flamboyant and standout pendant light hanging splendidly above a dining room table not only tells a story, it draws our attention and sparks curiosity. We have a stunning Aurelius hexagonal gold cage light from Graham & Green in our living room, which I bought many years ago. I felt guilty buying it at the time but have no regrets as it’s such a gorgeous and timeless centre piece in the room.
A statement light is usually oversized and quite probably a little extravagant in its design (just how we like it!). It might be a beautiful vintage chandelier or an iconic molecular ceiling light. Either way, it wants to be spectacular. Do remember to think about dimmable lighting to fit the mood and time of day. You want your statement light to sparkle and shine, not blind your guests as they sit down for dinner!
The Power of Pattern Underfoot
A statement rug is an effortless and clever way to inject colour, pattern and texture into a room or hallway. It creates a focal point and helps tie the whole space together beautifully. And it doesn’t have to cost the earth either.
I’ve chosen this vibrant ‘pop art’ living room to highlight the power of the rug. The bold combo of monochrome stripes on the pouffe and rug are both exhilarating and welcoming. And when paired with the striking burnt orange sofa against the sleek wooden floor, it creates an unforgettable statement that captures the attention every time you enter the room.
Let’s also not forget that a rug adds huge practical value by bringing warmth, texture, comfort and sound absorbance especially for the neighbours below a wooden floor!
